Christine Goetz
Managing Director
As a mom of 3 with a successful 30-year corporate career under her belt, Chris decided to embrace big change by channelling her driven and positive spirit into growing our fair trade fashion brand (and we’re so glad she did!). Her 'carpe diem' motto is what inspires her to enjoy all adventures, no matter how unusual. Just ask her about eating a bad oyster in Bangkok or developing a business opportunity in remote Brazil, or even about that time she ran into a llama in Paris. All good stories, she swears.
Maureen Dunn Fetscher
Founder, Creative and Brand Director
You’d never guess that the founder of Mata studied filmmaking in college (fun fact: she made a documentary about people who freeze-dry their pets posthumously). Maureen displayed a knack for business since her very first lemonade stand, where she mastered the upsell with $.50 twizzler straws. A fascination with the way people, cultures, and religions work kept her seeking adventure around the world, but these days she loves nothing more than an afternoon at the park with her husband and young son.
Michelle Thomas
Director of Operations
Sit her down to people watch on a bench in Turkey, read in the grass in the countryside, or dance on Midwestern farmland, and Michelle is a happy lady (with eye-catching style). She thrives on building relationships and making others happy, especially combining the two and connecting a new customer to Mata. Check in with her in twenty years, though, and you might find her halfway across the continent in a camper van.
Jonit Bookheim
Director of Sales
While “don’t be afraid to try something new” would be a good slogan for her, the simplest way to describe Jonit is to say: she has goals. Whether it’s to maintain a thriving houseplant population, get to know each and every Mata Traders artisan (there are several hundred), or master the international game of billiards, Jonit will do it. Her hobbies include travel, kittens, and social justice.
  • Christine Kwon
  • Taylor McCleneghan
  • Kristin Kostolanski
  • Katie Gavenda
Christine Kwon
Financial Director
A hobby-loving dog owner (Hi, Reggie!), Christine has tried it all - embroidery, woodworking, accordion, you name it. While her practical side makes numbers a breeze, she says she has an irrational love for zippers that lead to unusable pockets and watches that don’t tell time.
Taylor McCleneghan
Director of Production & Sustainable Development
Whatever it is, Taylor’s on top of it. A creative DIY-er and a practiced problem-solver, Taylor started off at Mata wearing a lot of hats, but now she just sticks to skinny jeans and many different pairs of shoes (bah-DUM-bum-psh). She works closely with the cooperatives and though she’s the absolute queen of organization, her purse seems to have skirted her reign of neatness.
Kristin Kostolanski
Designer
An adventure seeker at heart, Kristin is perhaps best known for her easygoing nature (necessary for her semi-annual immersion in the hustle and bustle of India). Compassionate, level-headed, and with a great eye for design, she is second best known for being the human buddy of Zoe, her Great Dane and three-legged furbaby.
Katie Gavenda
Graphic Designer and Community Manager
With a colorful style and a passion for screen printing and letterpress, Katie wasted no time jazzing up her corner of the office. Originally from the east coast, she loves sand and saltwater, but spending any amount of time outside is what really keeps her happiness levels up. Comfort is key, and she’s rarely found without her office slippers (and during those chilly Chicago winters, even a blanket).
  • Kacey McCabe
  • Justine Boquiren
  • Laura Mobley
  • Emily Graham
Kacey McCabe
Sales Manager
A water-lover with a heart made in the Midwest, Kacey spends a lot of time with her family and furry sidekick, her 9-year old dog, Gene. After 10 years in Chicago, she knows the best places to snag unique vintage stuff, and her unfussy style produces a great mindset about fair trade: "if you're going to shop anyway, why not make a meaningful investment? Fair trade is win-win."
Justine Boquiren
Designer and QC Coordinator
The ultimate multi-tasker has multiple languages under her belt - you can talk to her in Mandarin or Tagalog if you please. Walking the line between creativity and organization is not an easy one, but for Justine it’s second nature. She’ll also go out of her way for tacos, but for reasons NO ONE KNOWS, Justine does not like peanut butter.
Laura Mobley
Marketing Manager
A fair trade fashion enthusiast from head to toe, Laura loves the strides fair trade has taken in the last few years. You might not guess that she’s been to Guatemala 18 times or that she's a fan of blockbuster action flicks like the Die Hard and Jason Bourne movies (due to her calm and quiet nature), but her giddy love of animals is right on par.
Emily Graham
Customer Service Manager
A lover of color who despises pants, Emily is described by a coworker as a princess of whimsical peppiness. A positive force in the office, this jet setter plays the accordion, reads Agatha Christie murder mysteries, and the most fun fact of all is that she was the model for the Felicity illustrations in the American Girl book series (yes, really!).
  • Lilly Suwinski
  • Natalie Cruz
  • Maria Planansky
  • Sierra Campbell
Lilly Suwinski
Sales Manager
Constantly upping the layered necklace game in the office is our charming, style-adventurer Lilly. Her costume design background fuels her passion to hunt for vintage clothing, redesign old dresses, and pile on the patterns and color combos, but her real happy place is the state of Michigan (and those Pure Michigan commercials with Tim Allen's voice make a nice substitute when she can't be there).
Natalie Cruz
Customer Service Manager
Her Netflix queue is stacked with dozens of international films, but Natalie’s internet history is full of Instagram-famous wiener dogs. This girl knows what’s up in Chicago and she’s got a passion for making higher education more accessible to undocumented students. Her favorite outfit for restaurant-hopping, commuting, or traveling usually involves stripes and the color red - ooh la la!
Maria Planansky
Inventory Manager
From Arcadia to the Art Institute to awkward stand-up comedy, the span of Maria's interests is vast. While she studied extremist movement in the U.S. for many years, she now enjoys extreme(ly lovely) piano playing (Carole King songbook, anyone?!) and LOVES dogs.
Sierra Campbell
Sales & Operations Assistant
If you haven't spotted her at a trade show or retail event, you've probably seen Sierra posting about ethical fashion on social media or even modeling our clothes – what can’t this girl do? With a passion for learning about the world and empowering her fellow female, Sierra is a Mata girl at heart – from her playful personal style all the way to her infectious sense of adventure!
  • Miranda Thompson

Miranda Thompson
Design & Production Assistant
With a love for big cities like New York, Chicago, and Munich, and a chic style (though she claims looking “effortless” actually takes a bit of effort), you might be surprised to learn Miranda has a very outdoorsy side. She’s climbed the two tallest mountains in the continental U.S. but her biggest challenge now is combating sweatshop labor, preserving artisanal practices, and empowering women through fair trade!
